About the association

CVIT’s Purpose

CVIT’s purpose is to fulfill its responsibility to society to improve the prognosis of cardiovascular disease by promoting improvements in diagnostic and therapeutic techniques and the development of an academic culture. It hopes to achieve this by developing and promoting effective and safe catheter treatment for patients with cardiovascular disease, promoting clinical research, and disseminating results. (From Article 3 of the Articles of Incorporation)

CVIT’s History

In 1985, the first Japanese Research Society of Coronary Angioplasty was founded, a precursor of today's Japanese Association of Cardiovascular Intervention and Therapeutics (CVIT). It was initiated by Dr. Masakiyo Nobuyoshi of Kokura Memorial Hospital and worked to promote the dissemination of interventional techniques and knowledge by publishing detailed information in its journal.

This society developed into the Japanese Society of Interventional Cardiology (JSIC) in 1992, which introduced a system for certifying doctors in addition to publishing a journal.

A few years later, the Japanese Association of Cardiovascular Catheterization Therapeutics (JACCT) was founded in 2001, representing a different philosophy for interventional treatment. In addition to publishing a journal, JACCT introduced a specialist system with practical examinations. Both associations held annual conferences and contributed to the dissemination of technology and knowledge. A list of the past presidents of the two associations is given below.

While these two similar associations benefitted from a sense of competition, spreading the human resources, time, and budget over two organizations was inefficient. So, the two associations merged in July 2009 to form the Japanese Association of Cardiovascular Intervention and Therapeutics (CVIT).
